The Semester is Over

I seriously never thought I'd be able to say that. This back to school thing was a lot harder than I thought it would be - and I didn't even go full time! My plan for the fall is four classes - so hopefully I can keep up when that starts.

Anyway - my grades are all in and I did well. Two A's and a B. The B was in math and I worked my butt off for that grade! So, I'm proud of myself. I expect Zach to be A/B honor roll, so living up to that myself was very important to me.

Now I have about a month off before I start my summer class. Just one. I'm taking music as a night class. I don't know about that one - but it was either music, theater, or art appreciation. I'm rolling the dice with this one!

So, what am I going to do with myself? Oh, I'm going to make a pest out of myself at Zach's school and read. I'm planning on reading a lot.

Until next time ~ Kris

MilSpouse Friday Fill-in #39

Time to meet up with other MilSpouse bloggers and learn more about each other. Hosted by Wife of a Sailor, it's time for the Friday Fill-In.

Here are this weeks questions:

1. Have you and your spouse agreed to live in separate locations (a geographical bachelor tour) knowing that the short-term inconvenience would have long-term benefits for your family? How did it work for you? submitted by When Good People Get Together

Yes, but it was me. I did go to Iceland knowing that we would be able to pick a follow on. We wanted to come back to the east coast, so that's how we worked that. Was it worth it? Sure, we spend so much time apart anyway, why not get something out of it?

2. What is your favorite thing about being a MilSpouse? submitted by Sarah Ruth Today

Um, I don't know if I have a favorite thing. We haven't moved or anything since I retired, so my friends are the friends I had when I was active duty. Oh I've got it - my favorite thing is I don't have to put up with the work stuff like hubby still does! The AF is changing so much it seems like every day there is a new rule. That would drive me right up the freakin' wall.

3. If you could still have your spouse/significant other and your family, but take the military life out of it…would you?  submitted by Trust. Love. Believe. Bake.

Nope. We are together because of the military. It's not always been an easy life, but it's our life and I wouldn't change a thing.

4. What have your homecoming experiences been like after a year long tour of separation? submitted by Army Soldier, Army Wife

Both times we had to do a remote we moved right after, so the homecoming was this - pack and drive across the country. Just 'welcome home - the packers will be here tomorrow'! Actually I think it worked out well that way - we were starting over in a new place, with new routines, so it was much easier to get used to living together again.

5. If you have a child(ren) why you chose their name(s)? If not, why you would name your child something?  submitted by Tiara’s & ACU’s

Erik and I had a deal - he picked the boys name and I picked the girls. Well, since we only had a boy I guess I missed out - Heather Persephone would have been a great name!  So Erik picked Zachary (I wanted Hunter Jacob - also a great name!) but we couldn't think of a middle name. We had it down to 4 or 5 that we liked but couldn't agree on - so we put all the names we liked in a hat and drew for Zach's middle name. That's how he became Zachary Adam. Oh and his initials actually kind of spell his name ~ ZAC ~ we obviously didn't plan that! Also Adam was my grandfathers middle name that's why it made the final hat cut.

What's Your Song? 4.28.11

Oh Thursday. How I love you what with Goodnight Moon's song linkup. I get to spend hours going through YouTube trying to find the exact song I want to share this week. It's harder than you think - I mean after all, the music I love has been around for longer than some of those kids in my English class.....

Today I had an exceptionally hard time picking. I'm not sure why - but I hate to disappoint. Or ruin my reputation as the rock girl. Then it came to me - shuffle the iPod Kris and whatever song comes up first is the one you find. Well, that seems easy enough because let's face it - if it's on my iPod, I listen to it.

So to further diminish my standing with all my Classic Rock friends here is the first song that came up in my shuffle.

Don't turn it off - just get up and move - you know you want to!!

Don't forget to link up. Or at the very least go visit and hear some songs that were made after the turn of the century!

Until next time ~ Kris

A Look at the Week Ahead

Spring break for the boy is finally over. Not that I Erik or I had a break! I still had school and Erik worked on a landscaping project all week. He did a damn good job too! I'll have to post pictures later.

So, Zach heads back to school, and he still has over a month left! They started in August, you'd think they'd finish in May, but that's not the case - they go until the first week of June. But with a field trip and a field day during the month, maybe it won't seem so bad.

This week is my finals week. My paper is due tomorrow and it's actually done! Yes, I know - you think I'm  pulling your leg - but I'm really not. Since I got a passing grade on my first draft, I didn't have that much to do to fix my final draft.

Tuesday is our last weekly scout meeting before the summer. We have summer activities planned; camping in May, Rain-gutter Regatta in June, and roller skating in July but as for the weekly meetings this is it. I'm proud to report that all my Tigers earned their ranks, some electives, and belt loops too. Very cool.

Wednesday I have my Sociology final, which is not a cumulative test. Just a regular test that happens to take place on finals day. I plan on studying for this one the same way I have for all the others. That system is working great for me, so there's no reason to change it.

Friday is the dreaded Math final. Which is cumulative. So most of my week is going to be spent going over all the old quizzes and tests making sure I know or can at least figure out how to work the problems. The newer stuff I'm not that worried about - it's the stuff from 16 weeks ago that has me more than a little nervous!

So, what am I going to do with myself once I'm out of school? Well, I plan to be the stalking parent at school again. Well, I'm still the stalking parent, but not as bad as I was when I wasn't in school. Now I'll have all that free time though. Watch out Cherryvale! I'm also going to catch up on my reading. Oh and maybe actually go grocery shopping regularly again! That would make my family very happy. Sheesh, these people act like they need to eat or something! Can you believe the nerve of these boys?

I have only one month off before I go for my one lone summer class - Intro to Music - which starts May 30th and ends July 19th. I'm worried about this one because I have to sit in class for 2 1/2 hours two nights a week. I can barely make it through my 1 hour 15 minute class right now! I'll have to take a jug o' coffee with me for sure!

What are your plans for the week?

Until next time ~ Kris

MilSpouse Friday Fill-in #38

Oh my goodness, two weeks in a row! I must be on a roll here. Time to get to know some of the most awesome people on earth - MilSpouses! This lovely hop is hosted by Wife of a Sailor.

Before I start answering questions though I just want to say I think this is awesome. MilSpouses are pretty much the same no matter what branch they are married to. Granted, each service has it's own quirks but that doesn't stop us from standing together as the "home front force".

1. How many pets do you have? And what type? submitted by Life and Times of a Displaced Jersey Girl

Ok, so currently we have no pets. This is the first time in years though. The boy and I are trying desperately to talk Erik into a dog - the boy needs a dog - but alas, he's standing firm on his "no" - for now.

2. What are your favorite projects to do while hubby is away? submitted by my-inspired-nest

Honestly, I'm not I project doer.  I always think I will, but I never do.  I usually just think of projects I want done then give the list to Erik when he gets home.

3.  What are the must-haves in your deployment care packages?  submitted by Christine’s Little Blog

It depends on what he asks for and what season it is. I usually put some kind of letter or project from the boy, whatever Erik has asked for, and then some seasonal Little Debbies. Yes, you can never have enough Little Debbies in the AOR!

4.  If you could star in any TV show, which would it be? submitted by Just a Girl

I would LOVE to be on The Amazing Race. Or Big Brother. I probably wouldn't last too long on Big Brother - too much drama and I'm not good at that - but I think I could kick some butt on the Amazing Race.  If we are talking non-reality then I'd have to say Bones - I bet they have a blast on the set.

5.  What was the biggest hurdle that you faced during your/your significant other’s first deployment? submitted by The Pavlik Perspective

I was still active duty the first time Erik deployed - and we didn't have the boy - so I just worked like a mad woman. The first deployment AFTER he retired though - I guess it was trying to get used to being at home with only a 7 year old 24/7.  I didn't ever have that time alone to think or just veg.  I missed adult conversation! I guess my biggest hurdle was learning it was ok to reach out and just talk to people.

Until next time ~ Kris

What's Your Song? 4.21.11

Thursday already? Dang - that means I have my final paper due and my finals. Urg! But I couldn't let this week pass by without hooking up with Goodnight Moon for her song linkup!

I know, I'm getting a reputation on the link for being the "old school" girl. Because, well, I'm old and I think the music I grew up with (spent young adult hood with?) is the best. But today I decided to share the video that got me hooked on Glee.

I came to the Glee party late - this episode was the first one I watched and I was sucked into the Glee world lickity-split. And for inquiring minds - yes, I did a marathon and got all caught up.

So, here is my video for the week - the one that started my Glee addiction.

Go hit some of the other links and hear some good new songs! I promise, next week, I'll be back to my old school ways!

Until next time ~ Kris

Student Athletes - My Rant

Before I start - I know that college sports is what brings in the money. It doesn't mean I agree with the way student athletes are allowed to, well, do whatever and stay in school and continue to play sports.

What brings on my slightly irrational rant? The last week and a half of English class. Here's how it was supposed to go down:

April 11- first draft of final paper due. Myself and about six other students (and I use that term loosely) were supposed to bring in enough copies for the class to peer review. Two people brought papers, myself and one guy.

April 13 - The rest of the (now late) papers should have made it to class. Unfortunately I didn't make it to class - I had an appointment that I tried but couldn't reschedule. As per my Professors rules, I let her know in advance so I wouldn't lose any points.

April 18 - Peer review due. We were supposed to have two. Yours truly only had one. Now I'm losing points because I'm in a class full of slackers that couldn't bring their paper in on time? And what happened to the "in advance" rule so I wouldn't lose points?

What does this have to do with student athletes? My English class is full of baseball players. She keeps giving them chance after chance and I come up short once and I'm punished? To say I'm angry would be an understatement. Oh and to make it more interesting the baseball team just won some Jr College Championship or something. Honestly, they could have lost every game and it wouldn't matter to me - you should be in school to get an education. Period.

I know these kids haven't turned in anything on time and barely ever even bother to come to class. Why are they allowed to continue to play? Are they just ignored for 16 weeks so they can continue play and then next year they'll be off the team? I don't know - all I know is it's really pissing me off.

They are wasting my time by being slackers and being disrespectful to the Professor (who is actually putting up with it - so that's kind of her fault too - as long as she keeps letting them get away with it they will treat her rules and her like crap). The fact that their parents pay for these classes over and over just makes it more annoying to me.

Today one of them asked how much a summer class costs. I said about $700 not including books. How do I know? If I don't pass I know I'll have to pay back Uncle Sam. I'm very aware of how much each class costs. These two were like "My mom will pay that". Must be nice.

How long should student athletes be allowed to slack before they're actually held accountable?

Oh and they are the future. Scary.

Until next time ~ Kris

MilSpouse Friday Fill-in #37

Time to learn more about all the fabulous milspouses out there! Hosted by Wife a Sailor it's time for

1.  With PCS moves happening every few years, do you take the time to paint and decorate your home?   We always find a place to hang up our pictures, but we lived in this house for about 4 years before we painted any room but the living room. I actually just bought curtains for my son's room too. I grew up military and my mom always had trouble reusing the drapes from a previous house, so I've shied away from them.

2. If you could live in any home on a television series, what would it be?  Oh, that's a toughie. I like the apartment that the Russo family lives in on Wizards of Waverly place. I've always wanted to live in a big city above a business like that. I had friends in Germany who lived above a bakery and the apartment was a lot bigger than you would think!

3. What inspired you to start your blog?  After I retired I started homeschooling - then my husband deployed, so I went from full time military to SAHM in a blink of an eye. I started my blog to keep my sanity while I was going through the growing pains of learning how to be a teacher and mom.

4. What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen on base?  I don't know that I've seen anything really weird on base. When I was TDY to Shemya (Alaska - closed now) there was a huge sea lion that washed up on shore. But that was just kind of sad and gross, not really weird. When I was stationed at McClellen (oh, also closed, weird) there was a wrestling match on base - I saw Jake the Snake and a couple other guys. That was weird for sure.

5. Which historical figure (politician, writer, artist, scientist, actor, etc…) would you like to have dinner with?  This answer has never changed for as long as I can remember. I have two - Hitler and Pope John Paul II. Yes, together. Could you imagine so much good and so much evil in one room? That would be awesome.

Alrighty then - linkity link up with Wife of a Sailor and get to know some other awesome MilSpouses!

What's YOUR Song? 4.14.11

Time to link up with Goodnight Moon again

I know I'm a little late to the party today but I think it's worth the wait.

I thought it was time for a Power Ballad
(yes capital because they are a genre
all their own - a lost art for sure!)

I picked this one not only because it's one of my favorites
but because Brett Michaels is hot
(even still)

My Future Daughter in Law

"I wonder if I'll ever meet the person I'm supposed to marry and live with for the rest of my life." my 10 year old son wondered on the way home from school today.

He's 10 - sheesh - really? Are we going to have this conversation already? O.K. Mom, deep breath...

"Honey, you're 10 you have at least 20 years before you have to start worrying about that." (you know you love how I made the acceptable marrying age 30, that my friends, was quick thinking!)

"I know what she's going to look like though. I picture her in my head."

"What's she look like baby?"

"She's got long blonde hair, and doesn't wear glasses. Oh, and she's wearing a red dress."

OK, so now I know, anytime I see a blonde in a red dress - I need to take her out at the knees!

What's on my Phone?

Oh, it's been far too long and I have a ton of pictures. I swore I wasn't going to sit down and do this until my paper was finished and now, it finally is. Not only finished but the required 14 copies are printed, stapled, and ready for class tomorrow. I do have to go finish some math though - but I'll do that later.

Grab a drink, a snack and whatever else you want because it's finally time for

I'm starting with the beautiful Miss Emma

The beautiful Miss Emma and her beautiful mom

Kids sure can sleep the craziest ways!

I love the look on her face!

Next up is Mr. John Jr.

What an awesome smile!

"Daddy and Baby sleeping in a tree"
or on the couch
sleeping, that's the point here!

Is there not a time when we've all wanted to do this?
He asked for it - no, he literally did
my crazy son is the same way - thinks it's fun
I just think it's quiet!

Because it just tastes better when you steal it from
your sisters bowl!

Zach in his latest tie dye
and he can wear it to Scouts
He's very happy

This is some of the hail we received last night
yes, it left a big dent in my car
all the other vehicles managed to escape though
I think the one shaped like a star is pretty cool

I was having trouble with math
surprise NOT
so I sent this picture to my niece
who got with my other niece
and together my young chickees helped me
figure out what the hell was going on
Those girls rock!

This is a picture I took of our wedding picture
My dear friend asked to see the whole thing
when she saw part of it in a picture I
posted. It's hard to tell but we cleaned up
real good for a couple grease monkeys!

And there you have it, the extended version of what's on my phone! Now that I'm all caught up I guess I should go do my math. Three weeks and this semester is over!

Until next time ~ Kris

Zach's New Word

And it's not even a bad one, which surprises me considering the wonderful tidbits he brings home from school. Elementary school is so different now *sigh*

Epic. Yes epic is his new word. He uses it all the time now. Everything is 'epic'.

I get angry - it's epic
he had a good day at school - it's epic
he daydreams he's fighting a battle - you guessed it - an epic battle

Weird thing, he's pretty good at using it correctly, so the other day Erik asks "what does epic mean?" Um yeah, the boy didn't know - he just figured out where it belonged in sentences and then used it as he saw fit.

Yep - that's my boy.

Sorry this story wasn't more, well, epic.

Until next time ~ Kris

Once you miss...

It's so easy to miss a day (or three) of blogging, even if you're supposed to be doing it every day. I guess it's like the gym - once you miss a few, it's very easy to keep missing. I'm not trying to be lazy - but I've been so hammered with school and scouts it seems like I can't get anything accomplished!

I figured since I haven't bitched talked about school lately - except for the foot in mouth incident - that I would let y'all know how it's going.

This semester ends at the end of the month. I figured my current grades, and as of right now I'm passing all my classes. Some with a higher grade than others, but still, passing is passing! I would love to graduate with honors though so I'm really working on getting good grades.

For my finals, I have one more paper (rough draft due Monday - yes, I'm still Miss Procrastinator - but I have started handwriting some stuff to put together!), one last Sociology test, and a Math final (25% of my grade - yikes!!).  I'll most certainly be working my butt off for the next few weeks!

All those kids still annoy the crap out of me, but I just keep reminding myself that they are (mostly) teenagers who haven't figured out how life really works yet. I mean seriously, you show up 20 minutes late for work everyday and you won't have a job. At least the chatty girls who sit behind me in math finally realized their softball team status isn't going to keep them from failing and now they actually don't talk. They are the always 20 minute late girls now, but at least they are quiet when they get there!

Yesterday I had a pretty good day. I did better on a math quiz than I had thought. You should know that when I get a higher grade than I'm expecting I always make this tiny 'eep' sound. Trying to be excited in a quiet way - so as not to shove it in the face of the girls who are failing. I'm nice like that sometimes. So, after my surprise decent grade I looked at my Professor and said "are you being nice to me because I'm the old lady?" Sometimes, I just wonder these things. Nope - he says "you earned it".  Eep again!

I also finally aced a Sociology test. I've been doing well in that class, but the ever elusive 50 (out of 50) had not been so forthcoming. Funny thing is when I walked out I thought "I hope I at least get a high B so it doesn't demolish my GPA". Yep, I 'eeped' in that class too!

Next week I have to register for Summer and Fall classes. My fall schedule is all figured out. It's the summer class that I'm on the fence about. I want to take the class to kind of make up for the fact that I only took three classes this semester - it will help keep me on track - but then again, we can't make any plans until after July 19th if I do. I don't know if we were actually planning on going anywhere, but it's the whole knowing that you can't. Well, at least I have one more week to figure it out!

Until next time ~ Kris

Zach's Birthday Party

Who's the lamest mom ever? Who? Well, me of course! Last weekend we had Zach's birthday party and I just remembered I took some pictures. Which means I'm just now posting them. *sigh*

I forgot to take pictures during musical chairs and the pinata, but at least I remembered to take some pictures. Remember me, lamest mom ever? Yeah.

These are supposed to be the mushrooms from  Mario
Do you know how hard it is to make Mario mushrooms?
yeah, especially when your not very creative
He was happy with them though

Partay decorations!

Time for (cup) cake and ice cream
Zach eats neither, but it wouldn't be
a birthday party without them

In addition to musical chairs and the pinata
Zach requested twister. I think the kids had fun.
(and even though there is no picture proof the adults
also engaged in a game of twister!)

It wouldn't be me taking pictures if we didn't have
the obligatory random shots.

Everyone seemed to have a good time - and Zach had the party he always wanted to have - a few friends with some games at his house. Whoever he marries is going to love that he's rather low maintenance!

Until next time ~ Kris

MilSpouse Friday Fill-in #36

Today I thought I'd join in on the MilSpouse Friday Fill-In. I'm rather random about doing these but I really liked some of today's questions!

Link up with Wife of a Sailor to read the MilSpouse answers!

1. What romance movie scene reminds you of your spouse or s/o and the LOVE that you share?

We don't watch romantic movies. We like comedies, he likes action, but romantic - yeah, not so much. So, I guess I don't have an answer to this question. Not off to a great start, huh?

2. If you were allowed to deploy with your husband to a war zone would you and why?

I have deployed with my husband to a war zone. Believe me ladies, whatever you think is going on is 1000 times worse when you are there and know what's going on. Plus our son was living with my sister and it was suckish being separated from him. So, if given the opportunity - no I definitely would not deploy with my husband again.

3. Have you ever done anything intentionally/unintentionally to embarrass your spouse or significant other in front of his military cohorts?

We worked in the same flight for years and years so I probably did both. But maybe not - we were excellent at keeping work and home life separate. And I'm not just saying that - ask anyone who witnessed us at each others throats about work and then set a lunch date!

4. What is your most irrational fear?

Do I have to pick just one?! Not only do I hate having my face covered (there's something about breathing "used air" that makes me panic, but I hate crowds of people - which is probably why we are mostly homebodies.

5.  If you could only live in one climate for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Summertime in Eastern Washington. I could do without the snow and cold but I loved the dry not too hot warmth of the summers in Spokane. Oh heck - I'd take the snow too - that was my favorite place that we've lived!

Until next time ~ Kris
