{Memorial Day 2013}

It was an eventful Memorial Day weekend this year. I tried not to be too sad and snotty because my dad's birthday is the 26th and my sisters is the 27th. I miss them both dearly. We started the weekend bright and early Saturday morning - with our Scouts, placing flags on the graves of our local veterans. We had one of our best turn outs that I can remember. I love the fact that we get to teach these young men {and boys} the true meaning of this holiday and what freedom really costs. To make this weekend even more awesome, our small slice of South Carolina was honored to host the Traveling Wall. Even in small scale it was heart stopping, one day I hope we make it to D.C. to see it full scale. What another great opportunity for teaching history up close.

Honoring Our Fallen

Saturday we went out with our Cub Scout Pack, the Boy Scout Troop, a bunch of Veteran's and Active Duty to honor our fallen heros for Memorial Day. Our small service was to place flags on the graves. Regrettably, I forgot to take pictures of the actual flag placing - I was immersed in looking for graves and making sure the boys were being respectful. I believe I can say we did not forget any of our fallen. I did take some pictures while we were getting instructions - this was just part of the group that showed up. There were a lot of people and we covered many of the cemeteries in Sumter County. It made me feel proud to know that people still cared. I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day and took at least a few minutes to remember why we celebrate this holiday. Until next time ~ Kris

I believe we still have about 17 days left of school.  Yeah, are we ever going to finish?  It sometimes seems like we won't but I know we will.  We have to.  And of course there are the ever present niggling thoughts that maybe I haven't chosen the right curriculum path for next year.  I've decided I just have to let it go - I will make myself nuts if I don't.  We haven't completely finished our Memorial Day unit study, but we will finish the last couple days starting tomorrow then we are going to finish our Reduce, Reuse, Recycle project pack.  I'm testing CG the first week of June, so we can carry that into the testing days.  There is light at the end of the tunnel!  I've bee...
