Blogging Communities

My Bloggy Moms Dare offering for today is something I wrote about Blogging Communities a couple weeks ago.  I don't re-edit anything I write and save to post later.  You will learn that I'm a rambler and have trouble staying on track sometimes.  Well, you probably already guessed that anyway.  Have a great Sunday!

I've joined a couple of blogging communities in the last month or so. I'm still out on them.

I think the concept rocks. I really do – but I've noticed that a lot of people blog reviews, give-aways, and the like exclusively. I obviously don't, and I don't really want to read only blogs that offer that stuff. It's my personal choice. I don't have a ton of time to spend on the computer anymore just roaming blogs for no apparent reason, so I would rather read stuff. Know what I'm saying here?

I want to read about the kids yelling “I got to poop mom” in the middle of the store, or how a mom figured out how to engage their child in reading, or some random thought process about whatever. I'm not a stalker, but I love to see pictures of people enjoying life. Share the pictures of the 10 feet of snow so I can think “oh, I'm glad I don't live there” or the beautiful tropical shots so I can think “I want to live there”. Life blogs I call them.

Anyone that reads this blog knows I do talk about all those things and more. Life memories. You also know that I do participate in a couple link ups every week. I think the two I participate in are awesome. Cute, funky, pictures. Who doesn't love that? Well, obviously I do or I wouldn't join in!

When someone follows my blog I most often feel obligated to follow them back. I don't know, maybe I think it's some blogging etiquette I didn't know about. The reality is though, most of the time, I'm not going to follow a blog with only reviews and give-aways. I don't expect people to follow my blog just because I follow them. And I think it's wrong for people to expect the same out of me.

Sometimes I think the bloggers in the communities do expect that. And it makes me uncomfortable.

Besides the communities, there are groups within them. The Blog Frog actually calls the sub groups communities too – Mommy Bloggers calls them groups. I belong to a few groups in each one. I see a lot of the same people in all my groups. Which is the point I guess, right? Join a group that has like interests. But I'm going to tell you secret – my favorite groups are the Mormon Groups.

What? I know you're thinking it – “Why would a Catholic be in Mormon Group?” It's very simple. I've known a lot of LDS people over the years. Some of them have been very good friends. When I quit drinking I gravitated towards them because they also don't drink so I wasn't such an outcast. They are probably the least judgemental Christian group I have ever known. In short – Mormons Rock!

Why am I not a Morman? Because if I was I couldn't indulge in coffee or my very nasty habit of smoking. While I know smoking is bad, I don't believe that caffiene or cigarettes will keep you out of heaven. That's a huge point you should probably agree with, dontcha think? But it doesn't stop me from liking them or thinking they rock. And most of them still like me too – I just have to bring my own Mt. Dew to their house (and they've never complained!).

See, I rant again. I'm trying to stay focused – I really am! My point about blogging groups is this:

They are an awesome way to discover new blogs. You may even gain new followers (if that's a huge thing for you). But to make the most out of it you should pick the groups that fit you best – even if you don't think they will! And most importantly – don't follow a blog out of obligation.

Now if I could just follow my own advice on that point.

and that's...

  1. Thanks so much for visiting me and my blog!! I just read this post and I giggled a little. I'm a southern baptist and I find that most of my friends are Mormons and I love them to absolute death!! They are such awesome, amazing friends and people.

Anyway, nice to "meet" you. Hope to hear from you again! :)

  2. I enjoy reading. I'm a humor writer. When I read your post, I thought, oh she might appreciate my blog: no give aways, no reviews, no pictures (but that's because I cannot even find the on button to my camera). Thanks for your thoughts!

  3. I couldn't agree with you more on so many points you made. The give a ways, review blogs, feeling the need to "follow" those that "follow" you, etc.

And I love the fact that you are just so happy being "you". It oozes through in every thought you write on your blog. I try to be the same way on mine....no "frills" or "fake fronts"....just be who I am and accept my life as great just the way it is admist as the craziness life throws my way.

    You rock!

I love your comments and I read them all. I'm not very good at replying to them though. It's one of my many downfalls. I hope you'll leave some anyway!
