My Super Sensitive Little Man
Most of you already know my little man - he's my miracle - the child I was never supposed to be able to have. Ha Doctor's you were WRONG!!
Anyway, my little man is uber-hyper sensitive. Maybe because he's been raised mostly by mom (thanks AF!), maybe because he's half uber-hyper sensitive me. Who knows, but he is and I love him for it.
A couple times this year little man has gotten in the car after school and shared how 'terrible' his day was. Why honey?
Answer One - "Did you know that people sold other people as slaves? They just split those families up - took kids away from their moms. How could people do that to each other? Why would they think that's even a good idea?"
Answer Two - "Today we learned about the Trail of Tears. It made me cry. I don't understand how people can treat other people so bad."
I have a love/hate relationship with these conversations. The world has been, and currently still is, full of horrible mean people. I don't think sheltering him from the truth is good. I do think that sometimes 10 might be too young for the realities that history involves.
How did I handle it? We had a very nice discussion about treating people fairly, and remembering all the bad things that have happened so we don't repeat the terrible things that have happened in the past. I dread the Holocaust conversation though...
